July 22nd 7pm (exact times and bookingTBC)
In this special collaboration with Poplar Union in London, Marie-Gabrielle Rotie marks 20 years of producing and organising for Butoh UK, by bringing together a programme of international and UK performers. Through a series of short solos and duets, created by the participants, we reveal the many facets of Butoh. Some performers have studied with Rotie for over ten years, others have worked with her at Laban or Goldsmiths, and others have attended a few classes and work within a contemporary dance context. The diversity of responses is key to the focus of this event.
Butoh is an approach to dance, and can be seen as originating in the meeting of post-war Europe and Japan. Butoh foregrounds the uniqueness of each performer, resulting in a celebration of the questions: What is dance? Who am I? What is the body?
We will end the evening with a group ensemble improvisation 'directed' by Rotie and featuring an intergenerational cast. www.butohuk.com
